THE Philippine Olympic Committee is still awaiting word on the status of Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

Based on her good showing recently, Diaz is deserving of a third consecutive trip to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

According to the International Weightlifting Federation, the Philippines has earned a quota place in the women’s division because of Diaz’s performance in the recent Uzbekistan Asian Championships, which served as a Continental Qualification Event for the Rio Games.

“But there’s no official confirmation yet. We hope to know by the end of the month, or by June,” said POC first vice president and Rio Olympics’ chef de mission Joey Romasanta.

During the meet, the 25-year-old Diaz took a silver and two bronze medals in the women’s 53-kg category.

This earned the Philippine a fifth-place finish in the Team Classification.

Diaz was also a winner of three bronze medals in the 2015 IWF World Championships in Houston, Texas. She is currently ranked No. 4 in the IWF’s 2016 Olympic Qualification Ranking List in her weight class.

Vietnam, Uzbekistan, India, Mongolia and Turkmenistan also grabbed a quota place each.

Olympic-aspirant Nestor Colonia netted a bronze in the clean and jerk of the 56-kg category, but the men’s crew failed to get a quota place.

The final Olympic Qualification List for Individual Qualification will be published on June 20, the same day the IWF will inform the National Olympic Committees and National Federations of their allocated quota places.
