INTERNATIONAL Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Woman IM Janelle Mae Frayna did their best, but still fell short in their campaign in the 3rd ASEAN JAPFA Chess Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia,.

The 20-year old Garcia, a student of Ateneo, ended his final game with a draw against compatriot IM Paulo Bersamina that dropped him to third place.  Garcia actually finished in a threee-way tie with seven points each, but was relegated to third because of a lower tiebreak.

Instead, it wa 13 year-old  FIDE Master Anh Khoi Nguyen of Vietnam who emerged as champion after he defeated  Indonesian Grand Master and top seed Susanto Megaranto.

With the win, Nguyen also earned an IM title and a GM norm, aside from earning the distinction as the youngest IM in ASEAN or possibly in Asia.

Another Vietnamese, GM Thien Hai Dao  also had seven points after beating Theolifus Taher Yoseph of Indonesia.
