Netflix’s blockbuster animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has been named Breakthrough of the Year by Time magazine.
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Time unveiled its year-end cover featuring Rumi, Mira and Zoey, the members of the movie’s fictional girl group Huntr/x, highlighting the film’s unprecedented cultural impact. The publication said no animated feature has achieved this level of worldwide influence since Disney’s “Frozen” in 2013.
Driven by its infectious soundtrack, themes of self-love, and the continued rise of Korean pop culture, “KPop Demon Hunters” has evolved into a global phenomenon.
The recognition follows Netflix’s August report that the film had become the platform’s biggest title to date, reaching 236 million views. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the movie follows Huntr/x, a K-pop trio secretly tasked with fighting demons and demon-disguised idols Saja Boys, while balancing idol life.
The film features an all-star voice cast including Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, Ji-young Yoo, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Kevin Woo, Lee Byung-hun and Lea Salonga. Its soundtrack also produced a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, “Golden.”
