Celine Dion shakes off health scare for Paris comeback

Megastar singer Celine Dion announced Monday that she is returning to performing after a long hiatus caused by a rare health condition, calling the news “the best gift” on her birthday.

In a video posted on social media, the 58-year-old Canadian said her condition has improved and she will perform a series of shows in Paris starting in September.

“This year, I’m getting the best birthday gift of my life. I’m getting the chance to see you, to perform for you once again,” Dion said.

Her team confirmed to AFP that she will also release a new single, composed by Jean-Jacques Goldman, the writer behind her breakthrough album D’eux. Dion is expected to perform the song during her Paris shows, marking more than six years since she last performed regularly.

Dion’s Courage World Tour, launched in late 2019, was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic and her subsequent health problems.

“I want to let you know that I’m doing great, managing my health, feeling good,” she added in Monday’s post.

Dion revealed in December 2022 that she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, an incurable autoimmune disorder that causes stiff muscles. Treatment can alleviate symptoms, but she was forced to cancel all remaining shows. The 2024 documentary I Am: Celine Dion highlighted her struggles with the condition, including a seizure, but also her determination to return to the stage.

Despite her health challenges, Dion performed from the Eiffel Tower during the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony. On Monday, the tower was lit up again in her honor with messages reading “Paris, I’m ready” alongside her cover of Edith Piaf’s L’hymne à l’amour.

She will perform 10 shows over five weeks at Paris La Défense Arena starting Sept. 12. AFP
