QC court dismisses 3 cases against drag artist Pura Luka Vega

Drag artist Pura Luka Vega scored a legal win after the Quezon City Regional Trial Court tossed out three criminal cases filed by a religious group, citing lack of evidence to move forward.

In a decision released Friday, Sept. 19, QC RTC Branch 306 granted the defense’s demurrer to evidence, dismissing charges under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act. Judge Dolly Rose R. Bolante-Prado ruled the prosecution failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The cases stemmed from Vega’s viral 2023 performance of “Ama Namin” while dressed as Jesus Christ, which critics labeled blasphemous. The group Hijos del Nazareno had filed complaints, claiming the act was offensive to religious sentiment.

On X, Vega wrote, “Prayers answered. Thank you, Lord!” adding they remain hopeful for a favorable outcome in the one remaining case. “Laban lang,” he said.

Earlier in June, the Manila RTC also acquitted Vega in a separate case, underscoring the ongoing legal battles surrounding the drag artist’s controversial performance.
