Exes on screen: Julia Barretto, Joshua Garcia reunite in ‘Un/Happy For You’

Former flames Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia are teaming up for a new movie titled Un/Happy For You, a Star Cinema and Viva Films collaboration that promises an emotional rollercoaster ride for viewers.

During a recent announcement, both Barretto and Garcia expressed their excitement about the project, highlighting their individual growth since their last acting stint together.

“There comes a point when a good script and a great team come together, and it’s just such an exciting idea,” Barretto said. “It feels like the right time. We’re both in good places in our lives.”  She then turned to Garcia, adding, “I’m happy we’re working together again.”

This reunion follows their appearance in Moira dela Torre’s “Paubaya” music video three years ago. Barretto revealed there have been attempts to bring them back together for a project since then.

Garcia echoed the sentiment, explaining his immediate acceptance of the role. “When I found out about the project, I said yes right away. It’s been a long time since we worked together. Back then, we were teenagers. Now, I can say we’ve both matured. It’s exciting to have had our individual journeys and reunite for a film.”

The writers, Kookai Labayen, Crystal San Miguel, and Jen Chuaunsu, promise Un/Happy For You isn’t your typical exes-reunite story. Instead, it delves into the relatable struggles of navigating complicated emotions with a former love. They believe the casting of Barretto and Garcia adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative.

“We say things like ‘I’m happy for you,’ but in reality, if we’re not mature and honest, sometimes there’s unhappiness towards those who hurt us,” explained Labayen regarding the film’s title. “That’s where the title comes from. The slash in ‘un’ signifies it’s possible to be happy for that person too.”

Director Petersen Vargas expressed his privilege at the helm of a project starring the former couple.

“Having seen all their films together, I’m honored to put my own stamp on a JoshLia film,” he said. “The inspiration just flowed when the opportunity arose to make a JoshLia movie. As a long-time viewer, I feel like this is the film I want to see them make this year. As an audience member, this is the JoshLia movie I want to watch.”
