Award-winning Icelandic-Chinese artist Laufey announced her third studio album, A Matter of Time, alongside a new single, “Tough Luck,” dropping on August 22.
“‘Tough Luck’ is a fiery song about love gone wrong. I wanted to reveal an angrier side of myself—a side that this unfortunate relationship brought out in me,” said Laufey.
The single follows last month’s release of “Silver Lining,” which she performed with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic at Coachella, as well as during her headline set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
With A Matter of Time, Laufey continues to build on the nostalgic blend of jazz, classical, and pop that has made her a breakout star. This time, she leans into a more emotionally unfiltered sound.
“I’m constantly thinking about classical and jazz, how to properly preserve them and pay homage. For this album, I just wanted to let my heart wander,” she continued.
The album was co-produced by Spencer Stewart, who worked with her on her first two records, and Aaron Dessner, known for his work with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
“People expect a pretty façade of girly clothes, fantastical stories, and romantic music. This time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror,” the singer added.
Her 2022 debut Everything I Know About Love chronicled her coming-of-age, while 2023’s Bewitched—which earned her a GRAMMY—explored young love. With A Matter of Time, Laufey promises to give a deeper look into love’s complexities, delivered with the sweeping arrangements and vintage flair fans have come to expect.
