Imelda Papin’s road to golden years in music

Singing legend, entertainment icon, Hall of Famer, undisputed Jukebox Queen and multi-awarded performer Imelda Papin has not only endeared herself to countless fans, both here and abroad, but has carved a niche in the annals of Philippine musical history—all in a span of 45 years. Certainly a feat in an industry touted as fickle and indifferent.

Jukebox Queen Imelda Papin celebrates 45 fruitful years in the music business.

It all started when as a little girl, Papin would join and sing in church processions in a quaint small coastal village in Bitaogan, Camarines Sur. She later joined an amateur singing contest in Bicol, which is the local version of Tawag nag Tanghalan, winning as a weekly champion and proceeding to be the undefeated champion.

Her family soon migrated to Manila to seek better opportunities. While studying in the daytime, where she would fetch water to take a bath before going to school, she would later sing at first in small venues earning P5 a night, eventually performing in bigger and more respectable places until she went abroad.

Interestingly, she was a superstar in Bangkok, Thailand where she was dubbed as Asia’s Sentimental Songstress. When she came back to the Philippines, she was immediately embraced as the new singing sensation with her heartfelt and sincere performances.
