Oasis’ Liam Gallagher to rock MOA Arena

Liam Gallagher, the former lead vocalist of British rock band Oasis, is coming to Manila next month to perform in a one-night live concert on Aug. 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Paranaque City.

Ovation Productions has confirmed the debut performance here of the British rock star who has been named as the greatest front man of all time in a reader poll conducted by Q Magazine in 2010.

Oasis has been cited as a major influence and inspiration in their musical careers by many well-known bands, such as The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Maroon 5, and Coldplay, among others.

Oasis was a five-piece band from Manchester, United Kingdom led by Liam and Noel Gallagher, two brothers from public housing who became the defining musical act for a generation.

The group’s live act was distinguished by Noel’s proudly British lyrics, choruses that could make one’s throat clench and one’s heart ready to burst, as well as Liam’s sneering vocals and pissed-off posture, the cocktail of ego, camaraderie and one-upmanship that combined in making Oasis as entertaining and as volatile offstage as onstage.

The band’s third album, Be Here Now, in 1997 set a new record as the fastest-selling album in UK chart history, while What’s The Story Morning Glory attained greater success by becoming the third-selling album in British recording history.

The Gallagher brothers led Oasis to worldwide popularity and success in the 1990s, scoring several hits, such as “Wonderwall,” “Champagne Supernova,” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” and selling more than 71 million albums worldwide.

Liam has won many accolades for his vocal contributions to Oasis, as well as  his awesome presence that helped make the band a popular live act wherever it performed. However, his attitude also elicited much attention from the British press, which often ran negative stories about his alleged behavior.

With his erratic behavior, distinctive singing style and abrasive attitude that have been the subjects of media commentaries, Liam has remained one of the most recognizable figures in modern British music.

Liam’s singing voice has often been compared to that of John Lennon, such that he would jestingly claim to be John re-incarnated, despite being born eight years prior to John’s death in 1980.

He declared he has no clear influence in his music other than John Lennon and “music” itself, and has been known to incorporate many different forms, such as punk, indie, and New Wave, and recently has explored elements of jazz during his stint with Beady Eye, the band he formed after Oasis broke up in 2009.

As a performer, he cuts a striking figure as he belts out a song with the microphone coming in the closest contact with him between his upper lip and nose, rather than directly in front of the mouth as in the case with most singers. Liam has once confessed that the reason he sings with his arms behind his back is because it allows him to project more power through his voice.

"Liam Gallagher Live in Manila!"  on Aug. 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena is presented by Smart and produced by Ovation Productions.
