How Vic Sotto keeps his brand of comedy relevant

Senior actor Vic Sotto believes that a comedian needs to improve his material to stay relevant to younger audiences. It’s also imperative for an actor  to keep up with the changing times including the kind of platforms where viewers get their entertainment.

But what really contributed to the longevity of his career was his conscious effort to believe in the character he plays.

“I see myself as an entertainer. It’s always a challenge to be relevant — the new formats, the people that you’re working with because I’m a team player. I prefer situations that are funny rather than myself executing the comedy spiels or yung nagpapatawa,” Sotto, the lead star of sitcom Daddy’s Gurl said.

“Throughout the years, in doing TV shows and movies, I have learned to adjust. You need to give, you need to take,” the 67-year-old TV host and comedian said.

Now that the hit comedy sitcom Daddy’s Gurl celebrates its third year on-air with a brand-new hilarious season and a new set of young actors as newest cast members — Carlo San Juan, Prince Carlos, Prince Clemente, and comedian Jem Manicad —  Sotto shares some wisdom to guide them in exploring their television career.

“You really have to be a team player, everything must be in accordance with the script based on what the director likes. Hindi pwede yung lahat sayo, ikaw ang bida, sayo yung punchlines,” Sotto said.

In Daddy’s Gurl, Barak (Sotto) and Stacy’s (Maine Mendoza) loveable father-daughter relationship as a promdi widower dad and a pasosyal unica hija continues to be a much-awaited weekend habit for many fans.

The two have grown to learn from each of their characters and owe the series’ successful three-year run to the people working behind the scenes.

“All of us get along off-cam so makikita mo rin on-cam kung paano ba kami magbatuhan ng linya, kung ano ‘yung relationship namin sa isa’t-isa. All comes naturallyespecially with the help of our director,” Mendoza shares.

The series is further made comical with the appearances of Wally Bayola as Marikit Otogan, Barak’s wife who passed away but still talks to him; and Oyo Sotto as Lance Saavedra, Stacy’s strict, handsome, and charming boss.

Under the helm of Chris Martinez, Daddy’s Gurl airs every this Saturday after Magpakailanman on GMA-7.
