Marian Rivera in a role close to her heart

When Marian Rivera began her career in showbiz, she already accepted the fact that she would be given various roles. And it was a conscious decision not to be picky as long as the character can challenge her acting ability.

In Tadhana’s anniversary special, Marian is wearing a different hat. From being its host, the 33-year-old mother-of-one plays the lead role in the anniversary special with no less than her husband, Dingdong Dantes, directing the episode.

“The story is very close to my heart. In this episode, I play a mother who worked overseas then when I came back hindi na ako makikilala ng mga anak ko,” Marian told the entertainment scribes during the program’s anniversary presscon on Tuesday.

In tomorrow's episode of 'Tadhana,' directed by Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera plays an OFW  who had to bear being away from her children to give them a good life by working in Bahrain.

“In real life, ‘yung magtratrabaho lang ako sandali at iiwan ko si Zia, ambigat sa loob especially ‘pag uumiiyak na siya, ayun pa kayang matagal kang mawawala, at sa ibang bansa pa?” she said alluding to the sacrifices OFWs go through whenever they leave their families behind to work overseas.

In the special episode, Marian brings to life the story of Jackie—an OFW who had to bear being away from her children to give them a good life by working in Bahrain during the ‘90s.

With her husband seriously ill, Jackie was left alone to raise their family.

When the opportunity to work as a domestic helper abroad came knocking on her door, Jackie did not hesitate and accepted the job. It did not matter if this meant being separated from her kids.

What was important was to give them a decent future. Little did she know that an ordeal awaited her in Bahrain.

Jackie’s employer was cruel. On top of the physical abuse she got, she was prohibited to go out or even use the phone to call her family. Except for letters, she had no way of communicating with her loved ones in the Philippines.

She endured this for two years. But upon Jackie’s return to the Philippines, she learned that her family never received the money and letters she sent them and that the same people she worked hard for had turned their backs on her.

“This episode has a very touching story. Generally, we are offering this story to our countrymen who work overseas and we want them to know that back home, people here appreciate their hard work and contribution,” Marian said in vernacular.

Talking about the show celebrating its first anniversary on air, the Kapuso actress expressed her gratitude to the program’s viewers who continuously support her and the show.

“At first, we had one season, then another season followed. Now we are celebrating our first anniversary. It only means we are doing something good,” she said.

She admitted that when the hosting job was initially offered to her, she asked the management why she’s being given such task. She thought she’s not fit to be the program host. But she trusted the management and now she’s glad they’re celebrating such milestone.

The special anniversary offering of Tadhana will air tomorrow after Contessa on GMA-7.
