GMA Network rounded out another milestone in 2016 after leading competition in nationwide TV ratings based on full year data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

For the period January to December 2016 (with Dec. 25 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA registered a total day people audience share of 37.3 percent in NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement), ahead of ABS-CBN’s 37.1 percent.

Dingdong Dantes plays the titular role in "Alyas Robin Hood," which is part of the 10 most watched programs on TV based on nationwide ratings

GMA grabbed the nationwide lead from ABS-CBN based on people shares in September 2016, and has since prevailed over competition by consistently increasing margins.

GMA’s remarkable performance in the fourth quarter drove the Network’s dominance in the full year 2016 ratings. Leading across all day parts, GMA recorded a people share of 40.3 percent in the fourth quarter, outranking ABS-CBN’s 35.2 percent by 5.1 points.

Coming from a 5.1-share point lead over ABS-CBN in November in NUTAM, GMA scored its strongest performance in 2016 last December with a people audience share of 41.7 percent, equivalent to a 7.8-point margin over ABS-CBN’s 33.9 percent.

Encantadia remained the no.1 program nationwide last month, leading other Kapuso entries that made up majority of the list of highest-rating programs and specials in December.

Also in the top 10 are Alyas Robin Hood, 24 Oras, Pepito Manaloto, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, Magpakailanman, and Hay Bahay!.

Completing the list of most watched Kapuso programs in NUTAM are Tsuperhero, 24 Oras Weekend, Someone to Watch Over Me, Kapuso Movie Night, Lipad sa 2017 (Kapuso New Year Countdown), Wowowin, The Magic of Christmas (Kapuso Christmas Special), Eat Bulaga, Sunday PinaSaya, Imbestigador, Pepito Manalotalk 2016, and Superstar Duets.

In Urban Luzon, which accounts for 77 percent of all viewers in urban TV homes in the country, GMA sustained its strong showing as its full year 2016 people share reached 42.6 percent, 11.2 points more than the competitor’s 31.4 percent. GMA won against ABS-CBN in all day parts in Urban Luzon from January to December 2016.

Meanwhile, the Kapuso Network opens the New Year on an exciting note with a new line-up of programs starting off with the light romantic-drama Meant to Be top billed by Barbie Forteza. Also in the offing are, among others, the much-awaited first TV series with Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, Destined To Be Yours, as well as the Filipino adaptation of the phenomenal Koreanovela My Love From The Star, starring Jennylyn Mercado and Gil Cuerva.

Kate Valdez fits the costume she dons for Encatadia as Mira, the warrior. Netizens were very excited to see their idol in another costume that resembles the one worn by Glaiza de Castro who plays Pirena, mother of Mira.

Now, it seems we are given hints to what direction her career on television is headed. Good job, Kate!

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) brouhaha hasn’t died. Now, Senator Tito Sotto wants a Senate investigation on how the films that were shown in the annual MMFF was chosen, and that is apart form the Senate bill he is proposing that would create a separate  film festival for independently produced films during semestral breaks for the students.

Meanwhile, he also wants to investigate how the MMFF overlooked the alleged criminal act of slaying a dog for a scene in Oro.

The MMFF Execom has resolved to issue a strong reprimand on the Oro production people for misrepresenting and disregarding the prior agreement that they should include a disclaimer that no animal was harmed during the shoot of the film. It is suspending Feliz Productions (Felix Guerrero, Mark Shandii Bacolod, and director Alvin Yapan) from participating in future MMFF) for a year.

The MMFF Execom also said that it is not releasing figures of box office results and the data people read on social media were erroneous and unofficial.

Senator Sotto asks why not release the figures even if they are much lower than the box office takes in previous years.

In the spirit of transparency, I think the MMFF should release the figures in order for the public to know, if indeed the festival was an epic flop.
