Seasoned performers in Filipino musical

Dulce, Ima Castro, and Jim Pebanco play antagonistic parts in the highly-anticipated musical stage play Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, which they all find challenging to portray.

“I play the role of Mrs. Cruz, the pimp who sold the central female character Ligaya Paraiso to a Chinese in Ongpin. She is such a dark character who views everything as just part of the job without considering the plight of the poor girls she sells. Ima is my alternate,” says Dulce.

“That’s right,” seconds Ima. “For me, it’s one of the hardest parts I’ve done in theatre. Actually, I can say it’s more difficult than my Miss Saigon stint before. There are the intricate dance routines as choreographed by Douglas Nierras. Then, having Joel Lamangan as director, wow! Despite the hardships though is the sense of fulfillment knowing that this is a musical stage play of international caliber.”

Interestingly, this is a comeback of sorts for Jim to the stage play scene.

“I’ve done various theatre productions before but it’s been years. I’m really happy to be cast in Maynila because it’s one grand presentation. It’s a big-budgeted project that has a lot to tell about the continuing ills of the society primarily, exploitation. My character, Mr. Balajadia exhibits this to the hilt. He’s the foreman in the construction site who takes advantage of the weakness of his workers.

“It’s hard to portray a character which is far from your real self. I’m just thankful to the producers and the whole production team for believing in my talent. I’m happy to know that the role is tailor-made for me. In fact, they only had me in mind when they were doing the casting. It’s really my pride and privilege to bag this role,” he avers.

Dulce, Ima, and Jim have to make some sacrifices just to be part of this musical stage play.

“That’s right! With our rigid rehearsals, we really have to allot time and concentrate on the actual presentations. That means we had to turn down some offers while this play is ongoing. But we have no regrets. It’s very fulfilling as artists!”

Their participation in Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag The Musical definitely brings their level of artistry a notch higher.

“Theatre is a solid foundation for performers like us to hone our craft better. For one, the discipline is different. You really have to do your homework if you want to deliver specially that the reaction you’ll get from the audience is instant,” ends Dulce.

So, it’s official: Atom Araullo is now back as a Kapuso! The former ABS-CBN news reporter and TV host recently inked a contract with GMA and was warmly welcomed by the station as the latest member of its News and Public Affairs section.

It can be remembered that he really started with GMA more than 10 years ago as part of its prime time news program 24 Oras with his segment called “ATOMic Sports.” Asked as to the reason why he decided to come back, the good-looking broadcast journalist explains, “Honestly, there’s still a lot that I want to learn in the field of Journalism. I believe that GMA is one of the best places where I can fulfill this goal. For one, I love making documentaries and everybody knows that the Kapuso is very good when it comes to this department. I’m simply excited with the thought!”

For his maiden assignment, he will be part of the award-winning docu program I-Witness along with Jay Taruc, Sandra Aguinaldo, Kara David and Howie Severino.

“I’m looking forward to work with the team. I’m inspired with the wealth of experience my fellow hosts have,” Atom states.

Luis Manzano sheds light on the rumor that he has already bought current beau Jessy Mendiola a house.

“Not true,” he says. “Actually, I’m surprised to hear that I bought her a house. Some say it’s in Batanes, while according to some, it’s in Batangas. Well, none of the above! Ha-ha-ha!”

Speaking of Batangas, some quarters reveal he is often seen there lately.

“Well, I wouldn’t negate that. It’s because I dive there on weekdays. I stay in the resort, not in a house which many speculate I bought.”

Interestingly, why weekdays?

“It’s quiet during those times. On weekends, many divers come. I also dabble on my photography hobby on the side so I prefer weekdays because there’s only a few people around. Besides, I have my hosting stint in ASAP so there’s no way I can go there on weekends,” Luis states.
