What the world needs now, are apps, sweet apps! Pardon me for bastardizing the lyrics of Jackie De Shannon’s mid-1960 pop anthem “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” but it’s just that we cannot live without mobile apps anymore.
These digital products are now part of the lives of the majority who have become dependent on their mobile devices.
For our careers, personal stuff, amusement, weather, there is an app suited and currently being used for it. Thus, I cannot help but wonder, what happens if a crime stopping app is invented, and that this invention not only terminates the incident, but also leads to the discovery of the perpetrator of the crime. Will the world be a safer place “not just for some, but for everyone?”
This exciting premise of a crime solving app is the center of Caught In The Act, the latest movie from writer and director Perry Escaño. The relatively young filmmaker has two motion pictures to his credit, Ang Gurong Di Marunong Magbasa and Ang Sikreto ng Piso.
Declares director Escaño in an official statement: “Caught in the Act depicts how talented Filipinos are when it comes to invention and creation of advanced technology. The film promotes good Filipino traits like not giving up on trials and adversities of life, very hardworking, responsible, hopeful in achieving their dreams in life.”
The continuing statement says: “Most Filipinos nowadays — especially the millennial generation — are into social media. It is also an awareness to everyone that apps nowadays are faster and easier versions of websites to interact and connect. These apps are companions for today’s social life. They are literally very significant in our daily lives, especially on emergency matters, like what will be seen in this film.”
Lead stars in the movie are GMA’s Joaquin Domagoso and Andi Abaya, 2nd placer in ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother Connect.
These Generation Z stars to watch out for get their biggest break on this motion picture. They portray senior high school students who invented the new mobile app which allows people to report crimes.
“I am excited to be part of this movie,” says Domagoso. “I like the fact that is not a romantic lead and that there is more to the character than I can bite on since he is not limited to be this millennial version of a Prince Charming.”
His preparations for the movie, young master Joaquin shares: “I am constantly reading my script. And I am also reading about how apps are being developed and made. You know, apps development entails a lot of technical jargon so I just don’t want to be believable. I want to be credible that hey, I am one of the senior high school students who is responsible for the app.”
“It is a wonderful opportunity to be part of this movie,” Abaya avers. “I am glad that the whole production, especially our writer and director, direk Perry trusted me to play the part of a nerdy, kick ass student. The idea of a crime-solving app is no longer farfetched. The fact that I am part of the film that introduces this idea to the public, and it eventually becomes real in the nearest future, I think that is cool.”
Her first impressions of her onscreen partner: “We will be meeting personally during our first shooting day which will happen very soon. I only see and get to talk to him during meetings in zoom conferences. I believe, aside from being an eye candy, he is quite nice, you know. And how he speaks, it shows that he is well-mannered. I look forward to the day that we see each other face to face and in person.”
Completing the crew of the Caught in The inventors are fresh newbies in the showbiz block, Josh Lichtenberg, Jhassy Cruz Busran, and Bamboo B.
Portraying supporting roles are: Karel Marquez, Lance Raymundo, Shido Roxas, John Gabriel, Toni Co, EJ Panganiban, Roy Sotero, Ella Sheen, Jiana Aurigue, and Edna Hernandez.
The film is produced by MPJ Entertainment Productions and Golden Brilliance with Josie Paynor, Reagan Romero, and JCB Production acting out as its executive producers.
Director Escaño promises: “Caught In The Act is not merely a mystery crime adventure, it is a comedy with teenagers who, thanks to the app they created, now has the power to change and protect lives.
