Crooner from Down Under

We are a proud musical lot because we are in agreement that in this corner of the world, we have a battalion of greatest singers.

Inching his way to be part of this crème dela crème of world-class performers from the country is Jojo Sebastian, an unrecognizable name especially in Manila’s entertainment circuit but in the continent Down Under, specifically in Sydney—considered as one of busiest capitals in the performing arts—his reputation as a great singer, performer, and host/emcee sets the gold standard in live performances.

Sebastian’s love affair with music started a decade ago. Being part of the most passionate astrological sign of Scorpio, it is only but natural for this medical frontliner, a nurse by profession, to realize his dream.

The moment he aims his sight on stage, took the first leap and step to perform, there is no stopping him. In his heart, he knew that telling the stories behind the songs he sings brings him the greatest joys. And knowing that his gift of music and song bring happiness to many, fuels his creativity and emotions, and sing for his enthralled public.

The bedimpled singer has released a Christmas album recently. The record contains three traditional Christmas carols given a contemporary musical twist and an original composition penned and arranged by Maestro Oliver Gadista billed as “Christmas Ain’t Christmas Without You.”

“The original track, ‘Christmas Ain’t Christmas Without You’ is my personal favorite,” enthuses Sebastian. “The song is lovingly dedicated to my late father, Jaime Sebastian. When he passed away, my whole family was based in Hawaii, Christmas has never been the same again. I miss him… a lot.”

The traditional carols in the album are all special to him but the one that brings the most reminiscence is “Oh Holy Night.”

“It brings back the time when I was young in the Philippines. Together with my kababata, we made our rounds in our village to do caroling,” he avers.

As a grown-up man, his idea of the perfect Christmas is about spending time with family.

“You know, this pandemic reminded all of us the great importance of being family. Of showing that you care, telling and letting them feel how much they are loved. Nothing beats seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter, the hugs, even the pagmamano to your elders,” Sebastian explains.

With the release of the album, the singer is now planning to stage a  solo concert in Australia.

Jojo Sebastian’s Christmas Ain’t Christmas Without You album is available on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and other available music streaming apps.
