Myke Celis’ 5 coaching questions to address COVID-19 fear

The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has caused panic all over the globe. With rising cases every single day, citizens are getting alarmed, which causes them to engage in panic buying and self-isolation. Fear now prevents people from going about their daily routines as they live each day worrying about the virus as it spreads.

Coach Myke Celis, a global Master Life Coach and bestselling author known for his coaching platform #bestmeever, says that panic is a normal reaction. However, he adds that one must not stay in that state.

“Fear cripples you. In this case, people are crippled about something not yet totally clear to them. There are a few stuff we can read from social media and majority of which can cause panic coming from the space of something unfamiliar,” Celis said.

“But based on what I read and understood, the COVID-19 is not exactly a ‘death sentence’ per se. So, I believe people should do a self check first so that they can shake off the panic mode and revert back to their usual self because life has to go on, like it always does,” he added.

Coach Myke then comes up with a list of questions which people can reflect on to help put their panic mode to a stop:

1. Is what you know based on fact or assumption?

“It’s easy to gain access to various sources of information. But the important thing here is to verify. Do your diligent research. Don’t react immediately.”

2. What exactly are you afraid of?

“Ask yourself this: is it really the virus? Or your missed trip? Your work deadlines? When you are clear about what you’re scared of, you can slowly address them one by one coming from a space of logic, rather than just heightened emotions.”

3. How prepared are you?

“The DOH has released a couple of guidelines on how we could prevent the virus from spreading. As you do a self-check, be honest with yourself. Know what still needs to be done. To be improved. Then start from there.”

4. Is it something that you can control?

“Ok, no one knows how or when this Corona Virus will disappear. But if it’s beyond your control, why stress about it?  When you know you’re doing everything that you can, with all your best and all that you have, that should put you at ease. Trust that you’ll be fine. But you have to trust yourself in the process too. Calm down. Solutions will follow.”

5. What support do you need?

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you feel that it’s getting the best of you and you need professional help, reach out. No judgments here.”

“In times like these, coaching can help individuals understand their fears and emotions better so they can process everything fully properly. The key here is to understand that whatever space they’re in right now, help is readily available. They just have to reach out. That’s the first step in winning in this battle against the Corona Virus, and other personal battles to be exact,” Celis concluded.
