Philippine screen legend Gloria Romero dies at 91

Gloria Romero, celebrated as the “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” died peacefully on Saturday at the age of 91, her family announced.

Romero’s daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, confirmed the news in a statement posted on social media.

“TO OUR DEAREST FAMILY, RELATIVES, AND FRIENDS: It is with great sadness to announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez aka Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator earlier today,” Gutierrez wrote. 

She thanked the public for their support, prayers, and condolences, adding, “She will surely be missed dearly.”

Born Gloria Borrego Galla, Romero launched her illustrious career at 16 during the post-war golden era of Philippine cinema. Her extensive filmography includes classics such as “Cofradia,” “Pilya,” “Despachadora,” and “Dalagang Ilocana,” for which she earned a FAMAS Best Actress award.

Romero’s versatility shone in later works, with notable performances in “Bilangin Ang Bituin Sa Langit”alongside Nora Aunor, as well as in critically acclaimed films “Tanging Yaman,” “Magnifico,” and “Rainbow Sunset.”

On television, Romero brought to life iconic characters, including Minerva Chavez in “Palibhasa Lalake,” Doña Amparo in “Familia Zaragoza,” Doña Anastacia in “Munting Heredera,” and Cecilia Tanchingco in “The Rich Man’s Daughter.” Her final role was as the beloved Lola Goreng in “Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko.”

The wake will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapel, Hall A, on Araneta Avenue, Quezon City. 

The family has announced public viewing hours on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., allowing supporters to pay their respects.
