Co-stars and friends became teammates and cheerleaders as camaraderie, teamwork and sportsmanship made this year’s Sun Vs. Stars sportsfest held at Camp Aguinaldo last Jan. 27.

Star-studded sportsfest
Father and son and Sunlife ambassadors Piolo and Inigo Pascual

Star Magic’s 2019 sportsfest remains in partnership with Sun Life Financial and was divided into four Harry Potter-inspired teams namely Red, Black, Green and Blue with four different sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton and fun games.

The day started with the parade of the participating teams with their respective muses. BlackPuff and GryffinRed team had rising stars Yasmyne Suarez and Ysabel Ortega, respectively. Chienna Filomeno was RavenBlue’s muse while Vivoree Esclito and Julia Barretto were SlytheGreen’s official face. Ritz Azul and Kisses Delavin, meanwhile, were Star Magic Dream Team’s muses.

A brief opening program then followed suit, which started off with a prayer led by comedian Eric Nicolas followed by the Philippine National Anthem sung by belter Klarisse de Guzman. After which a Zumba warmup session happened, followed by the Oath of Sportsmanship led by Gerald Anderson. Concluding the opening program was a speech from SunPiology’s official face Piolo Pascual, who formally opened the sporting event.

As the games and competitions went on the whole morning, the GryffinRed team eventually emerged as this year’s over-all champion followed by team SlytheGreen and BlackPuffs, as the first and second runners up, respectively.

The kids were more than thrilled and energetic as they took on the various fun games prepared for them. But the Black team led by child star Yesha Camile, brought home the top plum. While the Red team led by international singer Elha Nympha, the Green team led by young drama star Raikko Mateo and the Blue team young host Chunsa Jung, took on the first, second and third runners up spot, respectively.

Team Gryffinred headed by Ejay Falcon among others, likewise won in the basketball category. Team RavenBlue, which had Jairus Aquino and  Bugoy Cariño as its members finished as the first runner up. While SlytheGreen with members Diether Ocampo, RK Bagatsing, Elmo Magalona, Turs Daza, Grae Fernandez and McCoy de Leon, eventually bagged the second runner up spot.

Ejay Falcon, Patrick Sugui, Anjo Damiles and Bugoy Cariño were eventually chosen to be part of the Mythical 5, while newbie Raven Molina was named Rookie of the Year. Star Magic Dream Team’s captain Gerald Anderson took home the Most Valuable Player award after leading their team to a victory against Sun Life Financial’s team with the final score of 105-99. The Dream Team composed of Ronnie Alonte, Jimboy Martin, Jose Sarasola, Luis Hontiveros, Joe Vargas, Miko Raval, Kyle Velino, Axel Torres and Ronnie Alonte definitely played their hearts out during the game.

The badminton games saw familiar and new tandems as Piolo and son Inigo Pascual played for the Black team and eventually bagged the second place, while PJ Endrinal and Dominic Roque from the Blue team bested everyone in the men’s doubles category.

Erich Gonzales and her partner from the Green team, meanwhile, emerged as the champion in the women’s doubles category. While Arron Villaflor, who’s also part of the Green team, with his partner, won the mixed doubles category. Erich and Dominic were unsurprisingly hailed as the Best Players in badminton.

The volleyball games were equally exciting as the Green team composed of Julia Barretto, Vivoree Esclito, Ashley Colet, Dionne Monsanto, Magui Planas and Chokoleit, among others, were named as the champion. The Red team had Bugoy Drilon, Loisa Andalio, Ritz Azul, Nikki Valdez and Lala Vinzon finished as the first runner up. As Ashley, Chokoleit, Bugoy, Magui, Nikki and Julia formed part volleyball’s Mythical 6, with Julia being named as the Best Player.

Soon as the awards were given out, some artists further flexed their leg muscles as they joined the 3,000 other participants of the SunPiology run in the 500m kids, 500m adults, 3km, 5km and 10km categories.

As a way of concluding the productive and healthy day, promising stars Vivoree Esclito, Heaven Peralejo, Marlo Mortel, Maris Racal and Sun Life’s brand ambassador Inigo Pascual, treated the runners and their co-stars with their exceptional performances during the after run show.

Check out the behind-the-scenes happenings as the stars converged and unleashed their athletic sides at the annual Star Magic sportsfest, Sun Vs. Stars, in partnership with Sun Life Financial, by visiting Star Magic’s official Facebook page.
