In 2016, Catriona Gray was widely predicted to bag the Philippines second Miss World crown, but she lost to a Puerto Rican woman. Will Miss World’s loss be Miss Universe’s gain?
All eyes are in the country’s Miss Universe bet as she flew to Thailand for the 67th Miss Universe pageant. “Off to Thailand to represent my beautiful country, the Philippines ‘mahal kita’ I hope to make you proud,” Gray posted on Instagram even as she thanked everyone who worked with her in her journey and her parents for their encouragement.
“Venturing off on an adventure of a lifetime and my thoughts turn back to the people who believed in me since the very beginning. Mom and Dad, thank you for always lifting me up and guiding me to become the woman I am today. Although you couldn’t be here to see me off. I love you both so much and see you in Thailand,” the 24-year-old Fil-Australian model said.
Expectations are high for a Catriona victory at this year’s Miss Universe pageant based on pageant websites’ pre-arrival forecasts making her the number one favorite for the title. As a sign of great things to come, Gray arrived in Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport to a warm welcome from a group of young, cheering Thai students carrying her name in big letters. Catriona was wearing a stylized Thai Chakkri asymmetric emerald green corset designed by Anthony Ramirez.
Gray has gained a wide following among Thai fans since she posted a video declaring her love for Thailand as one of her favorite travel destinations. Thais also expressed excitement for Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers and Miss Spain Angela Ponce, a transsexual model whose entry in the pageant has met opposition from some candidates including Miss Colombia Valeria Morales.
Catriona, who was born in Cairns, Queensland to Scottish father Ian Gray and Filipino mother from Oas, Albay, Normita Magnayon, earned a Certificate in Music Theory from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as a Certificate in Outdoor Recreation. She is a black belt in Choi Kwang-Do martial arts and was the lead singer of her school’s jazz band.
Catriona has revealed her extensive preparations for the tough competition including her signature ‘Lava’ walk. Gray has revealed that she will wear an evening gown highlighted with Filipino symbolism by designer Mak Tumang, a well-distinguished name and esteemed personality on the local and international fashion scene.
Follow Catriona’s performances at the Miss Universe 2018 itineraries: National Costume Competition (Dec. 11), Preliminary Competition (Dec. 13), Red Carpet Event (Dec. 16) and the Finals (Dec. 17).
