Beyond radio: The colorful personalities of Barangay LS 97.1 DJs

Mama Cy, Chiko Tito, Janna Chu Chu, and Papa Marky—disc jocks (DJs) of GMA’s flagship FM radio station Barangay LS 97.1 – take pride in their individuality and celebrate the multi-faceted personalities behind the voices that listeners hear on radio.

TRADITIONAL ENTERTAINMENT. Barangay LS' Mama Cy, Chiko Tito, Janna Chu Chu, and Papa Marky take their job seriously as they continue to stay relevant among young listeners.

Mama Cy is a modern-day Filipina who is single-handedly raising her 12-year-old daughter. She is the Barangay’s “Palaban na Beauty” who can practically do anything from being a fun but sensible DJ to writing, singing, dancing, acting, doing PR work, and managing events. “#BidaBidaAko,” she quipped.

Dubbed as “Ang Chika Master”, Chiko Tito, on the other hand, is a husband and a father who refers to himself as a straight male trapped inside a gay personality.

“I’m chatty and sociable with a cheerful heart na kaya kong makipagchikahan about anything trending sa Barangay,” he said.

Barangay LS resident “Showbiz Insider” Janna Chu Chu, basically breathes everything that’s happening inside the industry. He was exposed to show business at the age of 14 when he became a TV dancer for the late Kuya Germs (Moreno). Apart from being a Barangay LS DJ, he is also a DZBB anchor and an entertainment writer for online and tabloids.

“I was so happy dahil alam kong mapapalapit ako sa mga celebrities,” he said.

Last but not the least is “The Life Coach,” Papa Marky, who uses his unique opportunity to help people in emergency situations regardless of who they are or what they believe in.

“I value the essence of their stories and I respect their individuality,” he said.

In this modern world where people are focused on being liked and loved, they were each asked how they express their individuality.

Mama Cy said she eliminates all the unnecessary to make space and time for the more important ones.  For her, people in this modern world are so engrossed on being liked and loved even if it meant losing themselves.

“I learned to avoid the complexities of life.” She believes that we all have a blessing of our own. “So I don’t compare.” Mama Cy also acknowledges the truth that she is empowered not just by her own strength but through God’s grace.

“Our society is forever changing, so I do not really conform with what is standard according to society,” said Chiko Tito who doesn’t worry much about what others might say despite his interesting background. “I always explain to my kids na kapag sa radyo, ganito si daddy. Pero kapag sa bahay, si daddy ay si daddy.”

Janna Chu Chu, meanwhile, distinguishes himself by being passionate in what he does best – showbiz, writing, and music. “Kahit ang dami kong ginagawa, lahat kinakaya ko pa rin. Kasi hindi lahat ng tao nagagawa yung gusto nilang gawin,” he assured.

Living up to his moniker, Papa Marky said he doesn’t dictate people on what they should do about their problems.

“Most of the time, I listen and find the right timing kung kailan ako magsasabi sa’yo ng totoo,” he shared.

He further said that sometimes the answer can be found when the listeners begin to reflect on their own lives because most people in trouble are cloaked by negativity. He added that his job is to shed new light on difficult situations.

For these DJs, celebrating each person’s individuality is not about getting chained with what society imposes. It is getting out of one’s own box and following what he loves and what he is passionate about.
