Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, passed away yesterday, Friday, at a hospital near his hometown in Larbert, Scotland.

His agent Belinda Wright confirmed that the actor had been battling an alarming illness for the past two years. However, Wright did not disclose Coltrane’s condition to respect his family’s privacy.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling paid tribute to Coltrane on Twitter, describing the actor as an “incredible talent.”

“I’ll never know anyone remotely like Robbie again. He was an incredible talent, a complete one-off, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him, and laugh my head off with him. I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, above all his children,” wrote Rowling.

In a tweet, the official James Bond account called Coltrane’s passing a “tragic loss to the world.”
