After a year of abruptly going on hiatus, Filipino electronic dance music (EDM) artist Jace Roque is back to producing new music that highlights his chosen genre while telling the story of his recent heartbreak.

Jace Roque bares his soul about heartbreak and pressure in two new singles

Jace chose EDM as his genre because he saw the lack of songs in the Philippine market when he started his music career. Moreover, it suits his artistic preferences to a tee because he vibes more with upbeat songs with meaningful lyrics.

“Just because dance track siya, it doesn’t mean masaya na siya kasi my songs have duality. Painful ‘yung lyrics pero very upbeat ‘yung production,” he said during an exclusive interview with Manila Standard Entertainment.

The EDM artist added that the genre also helps him address personal issues and share through his music without triggering unwanted negative emotions from fans who can relate to his ordeals.

For his comeback, Jace prepared two singles, one in English and the other in Filipino, that tackle his journey to healing, acceptance, and self-love.

“Di Para Sa’yo,” released last April 22, Friday, revolves around his experience of loving someone 110 percent, only for him to realize that it’s not worth it. In the end, he turned his attention and affection towards himself.

Heartbreaks are already traumatic experiences and affect everyone differently. Jace admitted to attending therapy sessions because he couldn’t process the situation himself, leading him to seek professional help.

“I got treated for depression and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Pinarealize sa akin na ‘it’s not your fault—it’s not completely your fault. At some point, you have to take accountability for some of it, but not everything is your fault,’” he said.

Eventually, Jace learned how to let go of all the blame and the guilt weighing him down. He’s now on his way to accepting that someone better will come his way sooner or later.

In the meantime, “Be Someone,” released last May 20, Friday, is about Jace’s journey to showbiz and having to meet unrealistic expectations from his family, friends, and the industry.

Unlike most artists related to already significant names in the industry, Jace kept quiet about his family tree early in his career, when he began as an actor.

“We made sure na unknown individual ako. Walang connections, walang kahit ano. I had to work on my career na ako lang for the first few years. Noong naka-achieve na ako ng success, doon na namin ni-reveal sino relatives ko,” he said.

Jace is related to ‘80s action star Boy Roque, who encourages him to venture into action, and OPM icons Gino Padilla and Luke Mijares. Instead of following in their footsteps and succumbing to the pressure, Jace chose to carve his path and stand out from the rest.

The Filipino EDM artist will also release a meaningful mini-album aptly named “Inferno,” inspired by the classic poem of the same name by Italian writer Dante Alighieri. He chose the title because, in the album, he’s purging the pain, blame, and guilt that we experienced in the past year.

“Before ka umakyat sa Paradiso and Inferno, pinu-purge ka muna talaga,” he said.

As an exclusive treat, Jace shared that his full-length album coming next year is titled “Paradiso,” another reference to Dante’s poem of the same name.
