Remembering Cheslie Kryst

Tragedy struck the pageant world following the shocking news of Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst’s death by apparent suicide, on Sunday (Monday in Manila).

US media reported that the 30-year-old Miss Universe 2019 Top 10 finalist, jumped off from a luxury high-rise apartment building in Manhattan, where she lived on the ninth floor.

A civil litigation lawyer and Daytime Emmy Awards-nominated entertainment news correspondent, Kryst recently acted as co-anchor-presenter, with Carson Kressley, during the Miss Universe 2021 live coronation show and served as preliminary selection committee judge together with actress Marian Rivera, among others.

“She was one of the brightest, warmest, and most kind people we have ever had the privilege of knowing, and she lit up every room she entered. Our entire community mourns her loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time,” the Miss Universe and Miss USA Organizations said in a statement.

“May this day bring you rest and peace,” Kryst posted on her Instagram alongside a photo of herself, shortly before she jumped. Cyberbullying may have been the cause of her suicide.

“I can’t tell you how many times I have deleted comments on my social media pages that had vomit emojis and insults telling me I wasn’t pretty enough to be Miss USA, or that my muscular build was actually a ‘man body,” Kryst wrote about last year.

Reigning Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu was in shock upon learning of the former Miss USA’s untimely death. It’s a coincidence that a fellow Indian, former Miss India Universe 1997 Nafisa Joseph, Top 10 in Miss Universe 1997, also took her own life by hanging herself.
