Albay proclaims tourism envoys

To cap a month-long festival which relived the ancient legend of Mayon Volcano, the Province of Albay proclaimed its ambassadresses of goodwill and tourism in the Mutya ng Daragang Magayon, one of the Bicol region’s most sought-after beauty and brains pageants.

Lyra Velchez of Tabaco City finally won the top prize on her third attempt, besting 20 contenders from all over Albay and neighboring provinces. Runners-up were Jenny Rose Ignacio and Monalyn Abaluado of Legazpi City, and Marjorie Vista of Malinao.

Katrina Villanueva of Legazpi City was named Miss Tourism.

Adding to the glitter of the pageant were showbiz personalities Tweety de Leon and JC De Vera, and Heart Evangelista, Senator Chiz Escudero and resident judge lawyer Caroline Cruz who served as jurors. Alex Medina, fresh from the successful horror-comedy movie Echorsis: Sabunutuan Between Good and Evil, serenaded the contestants during the swimsuit portion.

A brainchild of Governor Joey Salceda, the month-long Daragang Magayon Fest featured a wide array of cultural activities, celebrity- and entertainment-oriented events, top billed by the GMA Kapuso Night and ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Caravan.

The three-termer provincial chief executive, a Tourism Star Awardee of the Department of Tourism, has nurtured the Mutya into one of the country’s best-produced beauty and brains quests by organizing the Albay Pageant Academy.

The said Academy provides a rigid personality development program to Bicolanas intending to join national contests, in its bid to make Albay the “Venezuela of the Philippines” which churn out world-class beauty queens.

Salceda, who is the incoming congressman of Albay’s second district, has provided valuable support to Bicolana charmers Miss Universe 2010 fourth runner-up Venus Raj and Binibining Pilipinas 2013 Supranational Yvette Marie Santiago.
