Vina Morales in an afternoon soap

VINA Morales is both proud and happy to be part of ABS-CBN’s latest afternoon soap titled Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita.

“Oh, yes! Actually, this is inspired by the classic 1986 Regal drama flick of the same title that featured a powerhouse cast comprised of Susan Roces, Hilda Koronel, Eddie Garcia, Snooky Serna, Richard Gomez, Janice de Belen and Aga Muhlach. In our version, I’m portraying the role of Tita Susan. I’m simply challenged because it’s no easy task.

“The production team has worked very hard for this project. It took almost two years to finalize the script. There were numerous revisions because the film is different from a soap opera. We have to stretch the story of a two-hour long movie and present it as interesting on a daily viewing basis. That’s why my character was given a back story. Compared to the original, our version is actually composed of three generations, which makes it more exciting,” she avers.

Many ask if she is under pressure ratings-wise since it appears that she is the central character in the soap apart from the fact that she has a bunch of showbiz newbies as co-stars here like Jane Oineza, Loisa Andalio, Joshua Garcia and Jerome Ponce.

“I guess it’s inevitable to be nervous considering that the plot revolves around me. Everybody knows that Kapamilya programs in the afternoon block register high ratings. All of us in the cast hope and pray that the public will support the show because it will give them a lot of insights about love and relationships.

“But on the other hand, I also feel confident because I know we have a good offering to the public. Yes, my character as Cecilia is well-written. People can see the transformation in her. They will witness how she evolved from a naïve lass to a sacrificing homemaker. I’m sure the audience can relate to all of the characters in the program.”

Speaking of her young co-stars who are considered greenhorns in the acting department, Vina says they have potential.

“I’ve been in the business for quite some time now. I was also an acting neophyte once. Based on my interaction with them on the set, I can see their interest, willingness and dedication to further hone their craft in order to deliver, like Loisa. I know that they have a long way to go I the ‘biz,” she says.

Though the nature of the show is drama, the actress-singer reveals it will be different from what viewers normally see on prime time soaps.

“That’s right! The management wants us to attack our roles in a more realistic manner. On prime time, you are required to do heavy drama. But in here, we must not over-dramatize specially during confrontation scenes. It’s pretty challenging.”

As an ender, Vina pitches the soap to avid TV buffs.

“They will like the story line. It’s our tribute to families who love one another unconditionally,” she states.

Derek Ramsay does comedy
in Mac & Chiz

After winning the 2014 MMFF Best Actor trophy for the romantic comedy English Only, Please, Derek Ramsay’s next television project is another light stuff, the sitcom Mac & Chiz over at TV5.

“Yes, I’ll be with Empoy here whom I last worked with in Super Inggo at the rival network some nine years ago. I’m really enjoying the experience since I’m learning a lot about comedy. I gain lots of insights from Empoy. I’m really glad to be doing this project with him,” he says.

Apart from this, two movie projects also await the dashing actor.

“I’m scheduled to do one with Kris (Aquino) under Skylight Films and one for Viva, a trilogy where I’ll be reunited with my English Only, Please leading lady Jennylyn (Mercado). This early, I’m really excited with said projects!”

Until now, Derek is vocal about his dream role.

“Yes! I want to play Lapu-Lapu on the big screen. I think it’ll be great,” he states.
