Mindanao artists bring early summer vibes to Manila with ‘Kabukad’ art fair

A group of 24 artists from Bukidnon, led by renowned Talaandig visual artist and musician Waway Saway, will showcase their masterpieces in ‘Kabukad,’ an art exhibit celebrating Mindanao beauty and resilience.

They will be joined by acclaimed Davao-based painter, sculptor, curator and cultural advocate Kublai Millan. The art gallery opens this Saturday, February 8, at the Manila Clock Tower Museum and runs until March 28, 2025.

‘Kabukad’ is an indigenous word associated with ‘spiritual growth or enlightenment.’ It serves both as a theme and reflection of the featured individuals’ artistic journey. The group is known collectively as ‘BuLAK,’ shorthand for Bukidnon Local Artists Kulektib.

An estimated 50 paintings are curated for this art fair. Each image radiates a unique creative energy that speaks proudly of a culture refined by the ups and downs of life in Mindanao. “This exhibit is not merely an art display; it is a testament to the blessings and strife that color existence,” the group said.

Like wildflowers swaying to an unseen rhythm, the BuLAK artists flourish in their collective pursuit of identity and self-expression. Their works speak of dreams and struggles, illustrated with hues that whisper the wisdom of generations past while inspiring those yet to come.

The featured artists include: Bethel Ann Redosendo · Elizabeth Baculbacul · Vicar Loureen Lofranco · Genevieve Lazarte Estrada · Jhonrey Balane · Alex Inojaldo · Clint Jaranilla · Mel Rovil · Wilmar Sumohoy · Rolly Hinampas · Jun Detomal · Johnny Viceda · Aldren Balili · Gene Laboy · Lorie Bolanio · Simon Mindaro · Bonne Villanueva · Lloyd Hinosolango · Rodelio Jr B Saway · John Patrick Lagrana · Sye · Dave Durog · Ely Macaso · Waway Saway · Kublai Millan

Through ‘Kabukad,’ they weave a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Each canvas holds a space for fleeting moments frozen in frames. Painting enthusiasts and casual viewers alike are invited to witness the enduring spirit of Bukidnon art in its finest and in full bloom.

“Kabukad Mindanao in Bloom” opens at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the Manila Clock Tower Museum. Viewing is open to the public until March 28, 2025.
