Just a few days after the cold-blooded murders of Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe saddened the nation, we are shocked by another upsetting news involving another lawmaker.
We joined the nation in crying for justice for the slain Albay congressman along with his police aide.
In the latter incident, however, it was the solon who turned out to be the bad guy. He is Iloilo 1st district Rep. Oscar “Richard” Garin Jr. who, along with his father, Guimbal town Mayor Oscar Garin Sr., mauled a policeman early Wednesday morning.
This is such disconcerting news that one cannot possibly justify whichever way you look at it.
Reports have it that the notorious father-and-son summoned PO3 Federico Macaya, of the Guimbal Municipal Police Station at the town plaza, ordered the latter disarmed and handcuffed, and then went on to beat him at gunpoint.
The Garins were reportedly infuriated by the cop’s failure to file a complaint against a man involved in a domestic dispute.
The lawmaker allegedly repeatedly punched and slapped the defenseless policeman while the mayor threatened to shoot him pointblank. There were reports that Rep. Garin reportedly even spat on Macaya’s face.
Reporters have sought the Garins for their side of the story to no avail. The congressman is the husband of former Health Secretary Janet Garin, who is facing multiple charges in connection with the Dengvaxia vaccine deaths.
If the allegations prove true as reported, these culprits must be penalized to the full extent of the law.
President Duterte has directed Secretary Eduardo Año of the Department of the Interior and Local Government to press all applicable charges, including direct assault and false imprisonment.
The question is: Will the lawmaker and his father-mayor, who is also a former lawmaker, prove to be men “above the law?”
If the reports are true, then they make the Garins worse than the Ateneo high school bully whot preyed on defenseless schoolmates.
The bully father-and-son tandem deserves to be thrown behind bars.
