It was with joy that I welcomed the breaking news that popped up on my social media feed last night – that Pope Francis, head of the Roman Catholic Church, has “allow[ed] priests to bless same-sex relationships” – and last month’s news that transgender people are allowed to “be baptized and become godparents,” according to the New York Times.
In a Dec 18 article, the NYT’s Jason Horowitz wrote the new rule “was issued in a declaration by the Church’s office on doctrine.”
The office’s prefect Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández clarified the declaration does not amend “the traditional doctrine of the church about marriage.”
In a Nov 9 NYT article, Horowitz and co-authors wrote the Pope approved on Oct 31 a Vatican document that states “transgender people can be baptized, serve as godparents and be witnesses at church weddings.”
These are steps toward “a more inclusive Church,” Horowitz wrote, and it is news the LGBTQ+ community in our predominantly Catholic country may welcome as ground-breaking.
Pope Francis is recognized for his progressive outlook, and these announcements mark a significant departure from traditional doctrines.
