Kyiv—Ukraine said Tuesday its air defense systems had downed 27 Shahed drones launched overnight in Russia’s latest aerial barrage.
“A total 30 attack UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were launched… As a result of combat work, 27 Shaheds were shot down by air defense units,” the Ukrainian air force said on social media.
Meanwhile, drones attacked Ukraine’s western city of Lviv early Tuesday and explosions rang out, causing a warehouse fire and wounding at least one person.
The city of Lviv, close to the Polish border, is seen as one of the safest in Ukraine but it has experienced more attacks recently. Three people were killed by air strikes in August.
Several waves of drones buzzed overhead, starting around 0130 GMT, and an AFP journalist heard numerous explosions and movements of heavy vehicles through the streets during the nightly curfew.
The Ukrainian Air Force said that drones were attacking the city and air defences were in operation.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi wrote on Telegram that “as a result of an attack, an industrial warehouse is burning in one of Lviv’s districts”.
“So far, we know of one person who was injured by the attack,” he added, saying “all Russians should burn in hell.”
Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv region’s military administration, said: “Two people were rescued from the rubble in Lviv, a man and a woman. The woman is initially believed to have no injuries. The man is in a serious condition.”
“The threat has passed,” he wrote after the all-clear sounded at 0300 GMT, thanking air defense forces.
In Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv region, 10 drones “were destroyed” overnight, governor Vitaliy Kim said on Telegram.
Falling debris from a downed Russian target damaged agricultural machinery at one enterprise, while no casualties were recorded, he added.
And in the east-central Dnipropetrovsk region, the Nikopol district came under artillery fire, said regional governor Sergiy Lysak.
He said six private houses were damaged, along with a power line and a gas pipeline.
A 71-year-old man was wounded and taken to hospital “in a moderate condition”, he said on Telegram. AFP
