The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday afternoon announced that the low pressure area east of Mindanao developed into a tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
The center of the tropical depression was estimated 1,075 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao, moving northwestward slowly.
It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph,
The weather disturbance is forecast to move generally west-southwestward until it enters the PAR on Tuesday night or Wednesday early morning.
Once inside the PAR, it will be assigned the local name “Basyang.”
The tropical cyclone will continue to intensify while over the Philippine Sea and may reach the tropical storm category by Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning, with further intensification before landfall not ruled out.
Based on the intensity forecast, the highest wind signal that will be hoisted is Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2.
