Forecasters warn of rains in parts of Luzon, Visayas amid New Year festivities

Some Filipinos will welcome the New Year with moderate to heavy rains as the shear line and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) continue to affect weather outlook in parts of Luzon and Visayas, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Sunday.

Based on its 5:00 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said rains measuring 50 to 100 millimeters will fall on the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Aurora, Quezon and Camarines Norte in Luzon, as well as Northern Samar and Eastern Samar in Visayas by Monday, December 30.

This forecast remains over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora and Quezon on New Year’s Eve, December 31. It will extend to Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur by New Year’s Day, January 1.

Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon will experience partly cloudy skies with light temporary rain showers, especially around early morning, by the afternoon and towards the evening, according to PAGASA weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda.

Forecasters advised local government units and the general public to be cautious, as weather events attributed to the shear line and ITCZ may result in localized flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in highly susceptible grounds.
