Trilateral talks between Marcos, Biden, Ishida to focus on key issues

The trilateral conference call between President Marcos, US President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, originally set on Sunday, has been rescheduled for today, a Malacañang official announced.

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez said that “the postponement [of the trilateral virtual meeting] was due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, in the United States.”

“The U.S. side requested the adjustment,” he noted in a message to Palace reporters on Sunday.

Biden earlier cancelled a January 9-12 trip to Italy to focus instead on the federal response to the California wildfires.

The three leaders are expected to discuss progress made on mutual cooperation, economic matters, and recent regional and global developments.

The three countries have stepped up security cooperation to blunt China’s efforts to control most of the region’s waters.

Last April, Biden, Marcos, and then-Japanese PM Fumio Kishida met in a historic trilateral meeting in Washington and discussed a broad range of issues, including security cooperation, infrastructure development, and regional economic resilience.

In December, the US, Japan and the Philippines also held a multilateral maritime cooperative activity to demonstrate joint commitment to safeguarding international waters and ensuring free navigation in the Indo-Pacific region in light of rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea and beyond.
