There will be no number coding on Monday, June 12, as the country celebrates its 125th Independence Day, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.
But the MMDA announced on Friday it will impose a traffic rerouting scheme primarily along Roxas Boulevard in Manila due to road closures in connection with the anniversary celebrations at Luneta Park.
Meanwhile, the three railway services in Metro Manila are offering free rides to passengers during selected hours on June 12.
The free rides at Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and 2 and Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) are available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The free ride is a yearly activity of the rail lines and the Department of Transportation in celebration of Independence Day.
Meanwhile, the MMDA is also suspending the operation of the Pasig River Ferry Service (PRFS) on Monday. The Ferry service will return to normal operations on June 13.
The temporary road closures on June 12 will be implemented from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. along Roxas Boulevard from TM Kalaw to P. Burgos, TM Kalaw- from Taft to Roxas Blvd, Maria Orosa St. from TM Kalaw to P. Burgos, including Katigbak Drive, Independence Road, and South Road for the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument and Civic-Military Parade to be held at the Quirino Grandstand.
Affected vehicles are advised to take alternate routes:
Southbound motorists coming from the three bridges – Jones, Mc Arthur, Quezon – shall use Taft Avenue to point of destination while those coming from UN Avenue Westbound lane shall turn left to Roxas Blvd. to point of destination;
Northbound vehicles coming from Roxas Boulevard shall turn right to UN Avenue to point of destination;
All trailer trucks or heavy vehicles coming from Roxas Boulevard northbound shall turn right to President Quirino Avenue to point of destination;
Motorists coming from Mel Lopez Boulevard going to Roxas Boulevard shall turn left to A. Soriano Avenue or straight to Bonifacio Drive, left to P. Burgos Avenue to Finance Road to point of destination;
All trailer trucks or heavy vehicles coming from Delpan Bridge shall turn around at Anda Circle to Northbound lane of Mel Lopez Blvd. to C-3 to point of destination; and all vehicles coming from Gen. Luna inside Intramuros shall turn left to Eastbound lane of P. Burgos or Finance Rd. to point of destination;
Vehicles going to Quiapo using Roxas Bouelevard shall turn right to UN Avenue or Kalaw then left turn to Taft Avenue to destination, while those going to PICC Area coming from Taft Avenue must right turn to UN Avenue left turn to Roxas Boulevard to destination;
All trucks going to North Harbor, from SLEC straight ahead to Osmeña Highway then right turn to Quirino Avenue, straight to Nagtahan Street, going to Lacson Avenue, left turn to Yuseco Street, and straight ahead to Capulong Street, then right turn or turn left to R-10 Road to destination.
Trucks coming from Paranaque area are also advised to turn right at Quirino Avenue to Nagtahan then Lacson Avenue to the destination. Those going to the south may use the same route.
MMDA traffic enforcers will also be deployed to assist in traffic management, as well as tow trucks, ambulances, and vacuum trucks. Concrete and plastic barriers as well as traffic cones will be placed in key areas.
“The implementation of the expanded number coding scheme is suspended on Monday, June 12, 2023 for the 125th anniversary of Independence Day, a regular holiday,” the MMDA stated in its advisory Friday.
For this day, vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 covered by number coding every Monday can travel on the main streets of Metro Manila during these restricted hours, it added.
The scheme was devised to keep vehicles out of major thoroughfares on certain days based on the last digit of the license plate.
Under the scheme, vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 are prohibited on Monday, 3 and 4 on Tuesday, 5 and 6 on Wednesday, 7 and 8 on Thursday, 9 and 0 on Friday during the said coding hours.
The implementation is from 7 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except during holidays.
