SEIZED SHABU. Elements of PNP-DEG and Las Piñas CPS, in coordination with PDEA, conducted drug operation at a parking lot at C5 Extention, Barangay Manuyo in Las Piñas City, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects, Joel and Merwin Bustamante, both residing at Tejeros, Malabon City, and seized 17 kilos of shabu. The suspects are said to be couriers of one Liu Chao, a Chinese citizen arrested in Makati. Norman Cruz

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo made the statement after police seized P2.5 billion worth of shabu from a Chinese national during a buy-bust operation in Makati City on Tuesday night.

“Despite the implementation of Oplan Tokhang, the syndicates are thinking of ways to enter the country,” Panelo told state-run Radyo Pilipinas.

“What’s important to me is we’re able to arrest them and discover their illegal acts. They may be doing a good maneuver, but our operatives are doing great.

The alleged drug couriers of the Chinese national who was arrested in Makati City were nabbed by authorities in Las Pis City, the Philippine National Police said.

PNP spokesman Bernard Banac identified the suspects as Joel Bustamante and Merwin Bustamante, both residents of Tenejeros, Malabon City.

Around 371 kilograms of shabu, one of the largest hauls of illegal drugs in 2019, were discovered inside an apartment in San Antonio village in Makati City on Tuesday night, according to a spot report by the PNP-Drug Enforcement Group.

PNP officer-in-charge Archie Gamboa said the buy-bust operation led to the arrest of the Chinese national identified as Liu Chao.

The suspect, who has been staying at the rented apartment for two weeks, was arrested after selling shabu to a poseur.

Police are now investigating how the illegal drugs were transported to Makati City.

Panelo said he was confident the PNP is on top of the situation to stop drug proliferation in the country.

“The PNP knows what needs to be done. It will not

neglect its duty,” he said.

The PNP has been implementing Oplan Tokhang, a knock-and-plead initiative that is under Oplan Double Barrel.

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the suspension of Oplan Tokhang twice in 2017 after it was associated with the killings of drug suspects allegedly in the hands of the responding police officers.

The President, later on, ordered its resumption with new safeguards.
