Madrid Fusion Manila, the first and only Asian edition of the so-called “most important gastronomy event in the world,” may still push through this year, but at a latter date, Tourism Promotions Board chief operating officer Cesar Montano said.

In a statement, Montano admitted that initially, the TPB management considered the deferment of the days-long event until 2019 “due to the non-availability of participating international chefs and exhibitors.”

“However, in light of new developments and change in logistical requirements which are advantageous to the government for the International Gastronomy Congress and the Fusion Manila International Gastronomy Expo, the Tourism Promotions Board is assessing the possibility of staging the fourth edition of Madrid Fusion Manila later this year.”

The event, originally scheduled for this month, showcases the shared history of the Philippines and Spain through culinary and trade exhibits.

Montano, however, did not elaborate on the “new developments” that revived the chances of holding the Madrid Fusion Manila this year.

“TPB Management continues to recognize the impact of Madrid Fusion Manila in the promotion of our country as a focal point of gastronomic interest worldwide,” he added.

Reports that Madrid Fusion Manila will be shelved came days ahead of the announcement of the organizers of another major gastronomic event, the World Street Food Congress, that it will no longer push through in the country.

“Under circumstances beyond our control…it is with regret we announce the decision to cancel this year’s World Street Food Congress,” WSFC organizers said in their Facebook page.

“Makansutra will be planning ahead for the next World Street Food Congress so stay tuned here. We regret any inconvenience caused.”
