President Rodrigo Duterte has signed into law Republic Act No. 10966, declaring Dec. 8 or the Feast of the Immaculate Conception as a special non-working day in the Philippines.

The Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title as the Immaculate Conception, is “the Principal Patroness of the Philippines.”

According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin, and has received the sanctifying grace that would normally come with baptism after birth.

Catholics consider the feast a “day of obligatio” and asks the faithful to attend Mass.
