Paolo’s sis: Career end far-fetched

DAVAO CITY—Mayor Sara Duterte believes that her brother, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte is not yet closing the door on public service after he announced his resignation during a special session of the 18th City Council on Dec. 25.

“Based on his speech, he said there that he looks forward to the day that he will be able to serve our country again, so I don’t think he will end his political career,” Sara said.

Paolo signed his resignation and submitted it to the Office of the President through a private courier Wednesday morning.

Sara said he did not stop her brother from resigning and only listened to him.

She said she would support whatever decision he made.

“When his name was dragged into the Bureau of Customs issue, he was already planning to resign but he was having a hard time because he was ashamed to the Dabawenyos because he presented himself to them as a vice mayor during the election and then he will just resign,” Sara said.

But a public row between Paolo and his daughter Isabelle on social media seemed to be the last straw.

“There are recent unfortunate events in my life that are closely tied to my failed first marriage. These, among others, include the maligning of my reputation in the recent name dropping incident in the Bureau of Customs smuggling case and the very public squabble with my daughter,” Paolo said during his speech.

Sara then defended her brother after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said that his brother resigned to avoid the investigation of the Office of the Ombudsman.

“I don’t think that the investigation of the Ombudsman will stop just because the person resigns from his post. It doesn’t work that way because in an investigation, you will look for the culpable persons, the statement of Trillanes is just a mema, memasabi lang,” she said.

Under the Local Government Code of 1991, for elected officers in a highly urbanized city, the President shall receive the resignation letter. If after 15 days, the resignation submitted to the President is not acted upon, it shall be deemed accepted.
