I-ACT impounds over 9k vehicles

The Inter-Agency Council on Traffic has impounded more than 9,000 vehicles in its continuing operations against illegally parked vehicles and other road obstructions to ease traffic in the metropolis.

The I-ACT's new team Task Force Alamid conducted its latest operation in the cities of Pasay and Parañaque, where at least 30 illegally parked vehicles were towed and brought to the impounding site operated by the Metro Manila Development Authority.

The team also towed and cleared all parked vehicles and other road blockages obstructing traffic flow near the four terminals of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Task Force Alamid is a composite team organized to help confront various traffic-prone areas and situations causing a slowdown in movement of vehicles in Metro Manila and peripheral areas.

I-ACT chief and concurrent MMDA general manager Thomas Orbos said the campaign will be intensified in the coming days. Stricter law enforcement action against undisciplined and irresponsible drivers will be imposed, he added.

“The war against illegal parking might be an uphill climb, but we will overcome. Strength in unity, the I-ACT Task Force Alamid is in action,” said Orbos.

Launched last Oct. 19, the Task Force is a special team composed of personnel from the MMDA, Department of Transportation, Police Highway Patrol Group, Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and local government unit traffic officers.

It was organized to help unclog traffic-prone areas and help enforcers manage traffic in critical areas of Metro Manila—such as roads leading to and from seaports, airports and bus terminals—in time for the holiday season, when traffic is expected to be heavy.

The authorities also target critical areas during busy periods, including bus stops and no-stopping zones, which are notorious for illegal parking and illegal picking up and dropping off passengers and goods.

In August, President Rodrigo Duterte signed an Executive Order strengthening the I-ACT to find solutions to the worsening traffic situation in Metro Manila and prevent billions in economic losses.

The Council, under the Executive Order, will also covering the neighboring provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Bulacan.

The President, during his second State of the Nation Address, said he wants all roads in the country's biggest cities cleared of all illegally parked vehicles to ensure a smooth flow of traffic in the metropolis.

The government's road and bridge projects will mean nothing if they will remain filled by illegally parked vehicles and other obstructions, the President said.

Duterte said he directed the MMDA and the local government units to immediately clear the roads and major thoroughfares of all unnecessary obstruction including vehicles parked on the street.

He is planning to have a golden age of infrastructure under his term with big-ticket projects such as roads, airports, and bridges.

Through this persistent campaign, the government is hoping it will be able to change the selfish behavior of most irresponsible drivers and individuals violating traffic rules.
