FORMER special envoy Jose Manuel Romualdez has been nominated as the Philippines’ ambassador to the United States, Malacañang said Thursday.

“We are confident that with Mr. Romualdez at the helm of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., we will further strengthen PH-US relations and promote stronger cooperation between the two countries,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said.

President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier appointed Romualdez as his special envoy to the United States last year.

Romualdez, a columnist of The Philippine Star, was unable to assume the post after undergoing an emergency operation for an eye ailment in January. He was reappointed as special envoy earlier this month.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim welcomed Romualdez’s appointment.

“Warm congratulations to my good friend on his nomination to be ambassador to the US,” Kim said in a tweet.

Romualdez will have concurrent jurisdiction over the Commonwealth of Jamaica, Republic of Haiti, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and Grenadines and Saint Lucia.

Last year, Duterte said he would nominate diplomat Marciano Paynor as ambassador to Washington.

Paynor, however, did not get the job because he was named director-general of the Asean 2017 National Organizing Council.
