DAVAO CITY”•Communist rebels attacked Aliwagwag Falls in Cateel town, one of the main tourist destinations in Davao Oriental, around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday but were repulsed by soldiers, an official said.
“No tourist was injured in the attack,” Captain Rhyan Batchar, chief information officer of the 10th Infantry Division, said in a phone interview.
He said around 40 members of the New People’s Army’s Southern Mindanao Regional Command staged the attack that lasted for almost an hour and wounded a soldier.
He said a team from the 67th Infantry Battalion was assigned to Aliwagwag to secure visitors as tourists trooped there during summer.
“The place is secure right now. Pursuit operation is ongoing against the fleeing rebels,” he said.
