INTERIOR Secretary Ismael Sueno has directed the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to conduct frequent and regulars inspection of all jails in the country aimed at preventing inmates from bolting-out detention facilities.
Sueno said Wednesday while the people were busy preparing for the Christmas holidays, the BJMP would have to work double time to ensure that inmates would not take advantage of the holidays.
Sueno’s directive surfaced following reports that four drug traffickers from the South Cotabato jail facility tried but failed to punch through their concrete cell using spoons and forks in attempting to bolt from their detention.
The suspects are facing large-scale peddling of shabu in different villages in Koronadal City.
After the foiled escape attempt, police authorities temporarily closed the detention facility to visitors.
“The BJMP should not let its guard down, especially now that everyone is busy with preparations for Christmas,” said Sueno.
The DILG Secretary said the BJMP should also strictly enforce jail rules and regulations in all city, district, provincial and municipal jails nationwide.
He added the jail bureau must crack down specifically on all illegal drugs inside the jail premises.
Under Oplan Greyhound, BJMP personnel search jail cells for contraband
such as illegal drugs, weapons, cellphones and guns.
Police authorities in South Cotabato have also alerted their personnel against potential escape attempt and possible violent acts by the inmates.
