UNIVERSITY of the Philippines-Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan pursued his application for university president to challenge the age requirement which he described as discriminatory.

“I intentionally filed my candidacy papers last Sept. 23 to challenge the age requirement of having to complete the six-year presidency before the age of 70,” he said, but the Board of Regents stood firm on its ground to disqualify Tan, 66, who will turn 70 on Sept. 12, 2022.

“It is wrong to discriminate against senior citizens, who have much to contribute,” said Tan in a letter to the Board of Regent, adding, however, that he does not plan to take any further steps.

Those at the shortlist vying for the position of UP president were Dr. Consolacion R. Alaras, professor Danilo L. Concepcion, professor Gisela P. Concepcion, professor Prospero de Vera III, professor Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, Dr. Orlando Mercado, professor Benito M. Pacheco, Dr. Roger D. Posadas, professor Caesar A. Saloma and Tan.
