Hold-departure order against Gatchalians

THE anti-graft court has issued a hold-departure order against Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay, and 24 other people in connection with an allegedly anomalous deal to acquire a bank in 2009.

The Sandiganbayan’s Fourth Division released  the order dated July 18 on Wednesday afternoon.

The court said Gatchalian and Pichay could not leave the country unless they were able to secure an approval from it as a result of the graft and other charges that the Ombudsman had filed against them.

The court’s HDO came after the Ombudsman last week filed before it a case on the allegedly anomalous acquisition by the Local Water Utilities Administration of a thrift bank owned by the Gatchalian family worth P80 million.

Included in the HDO are Gatchalian’s parents Dee Hua Gatchalian and William Gatchalian and brothers Weslie Gatchalian and Kenneth Gatchalian.

Sherwin posted a 90,000-peso bail on Friday last week while Dee Hua, William, Weslie and Kenneth also posted bail amounting to P90,000 each on Wednesday.
