Davao City, the first to ban firecrackers during the Christmas holidays, has gained a new world record on the number of people blowing at the same time paper or plastic horns called “torotot” to welcome 2014, officials said.

A total of 7,568 people joined the Torotot Festival on New Year’s eve to surpass the Guinness World Record of 6,961 people set by Japan in 2009, according to Liga ng mga Barangay Vice President Edgar Ibuyan.

“More than 50 barangays took part in the festival,” Ibuyan said.

The Guinnes World Record is yet to validate the attendance before the new record can be proclaimed as official.

Davao City is the first and the only city in the Philippines to ban use of firecrackers during the Christmas holidays, particulary on New Year’s eve. The city has imposed the ban since 2002.
