BAGUIO CITY—Total livestock production in the Cordillera region increased by 4.5 percent for the first semester of 2016, but poultry sector production declined by 3.3 percent, the regional office of the Philippine Statistics Authority reported.

PSA-CAR also noted that in 2015, agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing contributed 9.5 percent to the total Gross Regional Domestic Product of the region at constant year 2000 prices. Of the total agriculture output, 14.3 percent came from livestock and 5.5 percent from the poultry sector.

The agency noted that Cordillera’s total carabao production during the first half of 2016 was 1,418 metric tons, up by 1 percent over the previous year’s level of 1,404 metric tons. Higher demand for carabeef was observed during the period, which could be attributed to election-related activities, PSA-CAR said.

Higher carabeef production was reported in Apayao with a share of 27.3 percent, followed by Abra at 24.8 percent.

Cattle production in the region for January to June 2016 was estimated at 2,023 metric tons, 2.7 percent higher than the previous year’s output of 1,969 metric tons. Higher demand due to election-related activities also was cited as the reason, with Abra having the biggest share in total production at 35.5 percent.

Hog production rose 5.2 percent to 12,667 metric tons last year during the first half of 2016 from 12,041 metric tons in 2015. Kalinga and Abra were the major producers in the region, contributing 24.4 and 22.3 percent to total hog production, respectively.

Goat production in the region during the period was pegged at 429 metric tons, an increase of 5.1 percent from the 2015 first-semester output of 408 metric tons. Abra was the major goat producer during this time with a 60.6 percent contribution.

For the first semester of 2016, PSA-CAR said hog growers contributed more than three-fourths of the total livestock production, while cattle, carabao and goat production shared the remaining output at 12.2, 8.6 and 2.6 percent, respectively.

Total volume of chicken production during the same period was at 3,470 metric tons, lesser by 2.9 percent than the previous year’s level of 3,575 metric tons. A smaller supply of day-old chicks to broiler contract growers in Ifugao led to the decrease, PSA-CAR said.

Chicken egg production was also lower for the first half of 2016 at 1,744 metric tons, down by 5.9 percent from the 2015 level of 1,853 metric tons. Ifugao again contributed the highest production with a share of 42.1 percent, followed by Benguet with 24.7 percent.

Duck production fared better at 410 metric tons for the first half of 2016, an increase of 4.1 percent over the 394 metric tons the previous year. Ifugao and Kalinga were the major producers with contributions of 41.5 and 39.0 percent, respectively.

Duck egg volume, however, dropped by 2.2 percent or from 406 metric tons in 2015 to 390 metric tons in 2016.

Chicken production made up 59.9 percent of the total poultry output in the region during the first semester last year, duck production came in next at 27.9 percent, while chicken egg and duck egg both had a share of 6.1 percent each.
