BALANGA CITY—The Bataan Peninsula State University will establish a fish processing and marine products research and development center on its Orani Campus in Barangay Bayan.
In a letter to university president Dr. Greg Rodis, Department of Agriculture Bureau of Agriculture Research director Dr. Nicomedes Eleazar said they have approved a fund of P2 million for the project.
Documents furnished to the Manila Standard by BPSU OIC vice president for research, extension and training services Dr. Hermogenes Paguia, the project will be completed in a year and the university will provide a P600,000 counterpart fund.
The center will provide the faculty and students firsthand fish handling and processing and research opportunities.
The center will house the equipment, materials, and devices used in fish handling and processing. There will be also a fish processing laboratory.
The fishes to be processed at the center will include galunggong, kapak, tunsoy, tamban, bangus, and tilapia.
The center will the best venue for value-adding to fisheries and marine products that will employ strict quality control. It will share its expertise and knowledge with the fishing communities and interested individuals, the documents said.
Bataan is home to various fresh and seawater food products.
