A NEW DIVISION superintendent for Marawi City was appointed by Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal “Bombit” Adiong despite a ban for transfer and suspension of government workers, including public school teachers during the election period, an official in the province said Wednesday.

“Our governor had illegally officiated a new DepEd superintendent for Marawi City in violation of the Comelec’s rule on Election Ban just last Sunday,” said Mona Macatanong, Marawi City Schools Division superintendent, told The Standard in a phone interview.

On Sunday, Adiong allegedly appointed former assistant superintendent Pharida Sansarona to assume the Division Superintendent post for DepEd-Marawi City in a meeting with provincial teachers to prepare them for the visit of Liberal Party standard bearer Manuel Roxas II, who visited the Muslim-dominated province   Tuesday.

Also on the same day, Sansarona announced the closure of two major public schools in Marawi City, which are known to be the pride of Marawi bagging national awards in the recent Philippine Boy Scouts Jamboree.

Teachers in Marawi City allegedly failed to hold classes on Tuesday after Adiong threatened to deduct an amount from their salaries if they failed to attend Roxas’ provincial sortie on that day.

“We were mad. We teachers should be non-partisan but they forced us to go here,” Macatanong said.
