ANGELES CITY, Pampanga—The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) nabbed in a sting operation two policemen accused of extorting P500,000 from a Swedish national, a senior official said on Wednesday.

Chief Insp. Eugene Rebadomia, Pampanga CIDG chief, said operatives collared P03 Menachem Baking and P02 Ricardo Cabrera, Jr after they received the second payment of P280,000 from Goran Smedjer, 64, at Barangay Malabanias in this city last Tuesday.

“The suspects are in CIDG custody pending the filing of criminal charges against them,” Rebadomia said.

Smedjer complained the policemen broke into his rented apartment on January 25 while he was with two women he met in the Internet and took him to a “safe house” at Henson Ville subdivision. A woman, who claimed to be the mother of one of the women,  threatened to file charges and the policemen demanded P500,000 as settlement.

Smedjer offered P220,000 as settlement, but the two policemen said they will call again to collect the balance. The Swede sought police help.

Chief Supt. Ronald Santos, Acting Director for central Luzon, welcomed the arrest of the two policemen and said he hoped it would serve as a lesson to men in uniform not to engage in illegal activities.

He said the suspects have been subject of numerous complaints, including gun running, peddling of illegal drugs, recycling of seized drugs and selling of seized motor vehicles.

Seized from the suspects were an M16 rifle, a caliber 9 MM and .45 pistols, a 22 caliber revolver, a bullet proof vest and a Toyota Innova car.

In Clark Freeport, thieves broke into the car of a hotel guest and took away the cell phone, a bag of clothes and other valuables despite the tight security in the area because of the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.

John Magno, 39, of Mariveles, Bataan said he parked his car along Fontana Avenue to attend the wedding reception of his young brother at Fontana Golden Pavilion and the thieves pried the door open.

Close to 1,000 policemen have been deployed in the area to augment the security force composed of contingent from the Philippine Air Force and private security personnel of the Clark Development Corporation.

Most of the policemen were detailed in the various hotels, including the Fontana Resort and Casino, where some of the SOM delegates were billeted.
