Tacloban City—Two former top public servants from Leyte province have died due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) complications.
Former Leyte governor Leopoldo Petilla passed away on Monday, September 6, his daughter-in-law Palo town Mayor Ann Petilla confirmed the news.
“The Petilla family and I are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved father and former Leyte Governor, Atty. Leopoldo Enriquez Petilla, today, September 6, 2021, due to cardiac arrest complicated by COVID-19. Due to this condition, his body will be laid to rest as soon as possible,” she said.
“He was a lawyer who fought for the rights of the poor and the underprivileged. He continued his advocacy during his term as governor of the Province of Leyte. After his public service, he lived a simple, quiet, and private life. He spent time with his children and grandchildren,” the mayor wrote on Facebook.
The late Petilla became the provincial governor from 1992 to 1995.
The national flag at the Palo Municipal Building was flown at half-mast from September 6 to 7 to mourn the untimely death of the former governor.
“This is also to honor his invaluable services and significant contributions during his public service to Leyteños,” the local government said.
Retired Police Chief Superintendent Asher Dolina also passed away on September 4.
Dolina, a native of Palo, died while he was confined at a private hospital in Quezon City due to COVID-19 complications.
The late police officer also served as director of the Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas from 2014 to 2015.
“Sir Asher was an active member of the organization, dedicated to upholding Camaraderie, Voluntarism, and Excellence. He has faced numerous battles, accomplished numerous goals, and aided numerous causes. May he be granted eternal rest in the presence of the Lord,” said the UP Runggiyan, the oldest existing student organization of the University of the Philippines Tacloban.
“Sincere gratitude for the excellent work you do as a public servant and a member of the Philippine National Police, as well as for your contributions to the community. Hats off to you today, and always,” added the Police Community Affairs and Development Group.
