Short lists for judicial posts out

The Judicial and Bar Council has submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte its shortlists of aspirants for the vacant positions in the Court of Appeals, the Court of Tax Appeals and the Sandiganbayan.

In three separate letters the President, the seven-member JBC concurrently chaired by Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta endorsed the nomination of 36 aspirants for six vacancies in the CA, eight for the lone Sandiganbayan vacancy and 15 for the two vacancies to the CTA.

The vacancies in the appellate court were due to the promotion of Associate Justices Rodil Zalameda, Mario V. Lopez, Edgardo L. Delos Santos, and Samuel H. Gaerlan as associate justices of the Supreme Court, while the remaining two positions were due to the mandatory retirement of Associate Justices Luisa Q. Padilla and Jane Aurora C. Lantion.

The aspirants who made it to the JBC’s shortlist for the CA posts include Joeffre Willkom Acebido, Philip Acosta Aguinaldo, Selma palacio Alaras, Henry Sumaway Angeles, Eleuterio Larisma Bathan, Lorna Francisc Catris Chua Cheng, Ronald Chua Chua, Maria Celestina Castro Cruz Mangrobang, Lanee Sosing Cui David,

The eight nominees to the Sandiganbayan post left with the death last year of Associate Justice Reynaldo P. Cruz were Philip Acosta Aguinaldo, Lorna Francisca Catris Chua Cheng, Ronaldo Chua Chua, Lyn Chua Ebora Cacha, Dorcas Perez Ferriols Perez, Arthur Oliveros Malabaguio, Rodolfo Noel Saenz Quimbo, and Buenaventura Albert Jornales Tenorio Jr.

Endorsed to the two CTA posts left by Associate Justices Cielito N. Mindaro Grulla and Esperanza R. Fabon Victorino who both retired last year were Henry Sumaway Angeles,

Lorna Francisco Catris Chua Cheng, Maria Celestia Castro Cruz Mangrobang, Lanee Sosing Cui David, Vicky Chua Fernandez, Corazon Gonzales Ferrer Flores,

Mary Josephine Dela Pena Lazaro, John Zurbito Lee, Mitushealla Reyes Manzareno Casifjo, Jose Carlito Mercado Montenegro, Jennifer Joy Chua Ong, Marian Ivy Ferrer Reyes Fajardo, Maria Paz Rivera Reyes Yson, Mark Anthony Pizarro Tamayo, and Rowena Nieves Adena Tan.

The JBC is the constitutional office mandated to accept, vet and nominates appointments to the judiciary. The President can appoint judiciary members only from those nominated by the JBC.
